Finally started Dragon Age Veilguard and so far it is actually not bad. It took me a long time to get into a nice flow with the combat. Seriously swore a lot at the beginning, but we finally turned a page. Also, having a fighter definitely helps. They can taunt and take the heat off you, which is what you need as a mage. If I play it again, I will play a fighter and see if it makes the beginning more enjoyable.
The story is not as disjointed from Inquisition as I was lead to believe. I tried to avoid spoilers all this time to try to go in as blind as I can. I have the entire squad now. So far, they are all interesting characters with depth. I have four in the running for romance options: Lace, Lucanis, Davrin, and Bellara.
I am playing my usual for a first Dragon Age run: an elven mage. I have the Veil Jumper background because it made the most sense for getting involved in all the Dread Wolf stuff. And I do a lot of the “funny” responses.
I read a lot of posts accusing players of being racist for not choosing Davrin because everyone loved Alistair and Cullen in previous games. I agree that there is probably some racism involved. He is also an elf and not a human, so it could be some fantasy racism at work as well. But he is not Alistair or Cullen. So far in the game, he has been super serious, but he has a lot on his plate with trying to keep an entire species alive. You could tease and joke around with Alistair and Cullen. You could mess with them. So far Davrin is giving me nothing like that, but I am enjoying watching him turn into a caregiver role for Assan. I love Assan. You can hug him!
I also want to shout out all the great squad interactions in between missions. They are so fun and varied. You can actually watch them become friends. At least that is what is happening with my choices. Maybe you can cause strife. Something to play with in the future.
Also, you can pet cats and dogs around Thedas!
The hair physics are amazing!
TLDR: Having fun with Veilguard so far!
